Ronald Knowles died on 4th March, 1915, after having been sent to a base hospital on the coast, but it is not known if he died from wounds or from illness, both of which took their toll of the men on the Western Front. The 4th Middlesex battalion was part of 8 Brigade, 3rd Division, that were holding the line just to the south of Ypres during the opening months of 1915.
